The art of portraiture has at first ambition to render the "absent present", it is a tool of propaganda for the sovereigns, because it makes it possible to establish the social situation of a personage for the future generations. With the Flemish art and the Italian Renaissance, the portrait is democratized and flatters the noble as much as depicts the popular classes with the requirement of a perfect realism. Today the art of portraiture is a means of experimentation, free representation and interpretation of the subject independently of realism.
