For a long time, art has been a translation tool for the Christian Church by giving a form and a symbolism to texts sacred to a majority illiterate population. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the Church is the main patron and sponsor of a huge production of works of art. At the time of the revolution, in spite of a desinterest of the religious practice, the religious works abound until the XIXth century.
